Courtney Weston, MA & Jennifer Kengeter, PsyD
Through utilization of a biopsychosocial model, this presentation will examine the impact that culture, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, age, gender, religion and other sociocultural issues have at the individual, group, and community level. Specifically, the "addressing" model will be used as a framework to understand how various diversity factors contribute to one's cultural identity. These factors will also be discussed in the context of mental health services, and issues related to cultural differences, prejudice, stereotyping, privilege, language, and communication will be discussed as they relate to mental health treatment. Relevant research will be presented that identifies populations at-risk for mental health issues and access to care due to cultural stigma, SES, health disparities, and additional aspects related to diversity. Lastly, methods to overcome barriers to mental health care, increase cultural competence, and promote diversity in the provision of mental health services will be discussed.
