Patricia M Griffin, Ph.D. Associate Professor of Criminal Justice Holy Family University; Senior International Research Consultant United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime, Region of East Africa
Dr. Patricia Griffin (USA) is an Associate Professor of Criminal Justice and a scholar-practitioner with a demonstrated record of success carrying out applied mixed-methods research and evaluation in the areas of applied psychology, organization development, leadership, behavioral health, and public safety. Dr. Griffin is engaged in evaluation research of an Adult Drug Court, Mental Health Court, and a county-level co-responder program that integrates social workers into policing agencies.
Over the past five years, Dr. Griffin has served as the Senior International Research Consultant for the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime in East Africa during which time she served as the primary investigator to lead two country-wide assessments of drug and alcohol use in Kenya. She has worked with the Kenyan National Police Service and the Kenya Wildlife Service. For each of these assessments, Dr. Griffin carried out the initial desk work in her home base, and then commenced to carry out the field research in Kenya. This mixed-methods research included validated evidence-based scales such as AUDIT, CAGE, and the DSA-20, along with focus group discussions. Among the key research findings, the empirical data demonstrated the need for a broad- brush employee assistance program.
Dr. Griffin will serve as the primary presenter. She will lead the panel. Dr. Griffin’s contribution to the panel presentation will be to focus on the use of research to advance organization development and employee wellness.
Mr. John Mugendi, Director of Administration for the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS). Mr. Mugendi will join us via Zoom from Nairobi, Kenya. Among his many areas of responsibility, Mr. Mugendi is charged with ensuring that contractual obligations to the Kenyan Government, which includes identification and implementation of personnel’s alcohol and drug use, is accurately assessed and that amelioration programs are implemented, where needed. The Office of Human Resources and Human Capital fall under his domain.
Mr. Mugendi’s contribution to the panel presentation will be to focus on organization development.
Jim Nestor, MA, CEAP, LCADC. Mr. Nestor has almost forty years dedicated to organization development, employee health and wellness, and employee assistance professionals. Over the past five years, much needed attention has been directed at mental health in the workplace. At the same time, however, EAPs must not lose sight of substance use disorder and addiction services. Some EAP professionals have raised concern that these areas are not being addressed.
Mr. Nestor’s contribution to the panel will be to focus on substance use disorder and addiction.
Chris Scheiblein, BS, CEAP. Mr. Scheiblein has been working as an EAP since 2006. He has been an active member and has served in leadership roles in the Greater Philadelphia Chapter of the International Employee Assistance Professionals Association. Chris has developed peer counseling programs and has worked with unions and trade association members and their families to ensure that they receive the proper help and support with substance use disorder and metal health concerns.
Drawing upon this past work and his current position leading the IUPAT Helping Hand, Chris is uniquely positioned as a panelist to speak about administrative issues, especially as these relate to what he is doing in the area of peer counselors.
