Overview of Training:
Behavioral Health, EA programming, workplace safety and wellness has been a staple of assistance for employees for many years in numerous organizations. In public sector first responder agencies the culture and stigma for getting help has slowed the attention of these assistance services. For years the MH and EAP positions have been cautionary services that deterred the utilization of help especially with the trauma focused work. In the past 5-10 years the acceptance of peer support within many agencies has grown exponentially and many organizations have added this valuable asset to their operational functions. This training will provide the new foundation and function of peer support and its value as a conduit to workplace mental health wellness and resources. It will establish a strong need for EA attention and provide guidelines for standards of practice and avenues to create training that could develop a means to professional certification.

Harry Levant –
Harry Levant is an Internationally Certified Gambling Counselor and mental health therapist in private practice and directs the gambling treatment program with Ethos Treatment, LLC in Broomall and Jenkintown, PA. Harry is also proud to serve as an adviser to the Public Health Advocacy Institute at Northeastern University. He is also a doctoral student at Northeastern and his research, thesis, and dissertation are focused on developing a public health approach to prevent harm related to gambling and gambling disorder.
Harry holds a Master’s in Professional Clinical Counseling from La Salle University and a Juris Doctorate from Temple University School of Law. Has been recognized as an
Internationally Certified Gambling Counselor (ICGC-I). He is a member of numerous professional organizations including the American Counseling Association, the Pennsylvania Counseling Association, Chi Sigma Iota National Honor Society for Counselors, and Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers of Pennsylvania.
Harry is also a public health advocate and appears on television and radio addressing the prevention and treatment of gambling disorder. He is the author of the law review commentary “Upon Further Review, the NFL Gambling Strategy is a Risk to Public Health” and co-author with Professor Richard Daynard and Professor Mark Gottlieb of the Boston Globe op-ed article, “Massachusetts Makes a Losing Bet on Gambling”.
Harry is also a gambling addict in recovery. He made his last bet on April 27, 2014. On that day, gambling addiction brought him within seconds of taking his life. “Gambling is a known addictive product and gambling disorder is an addiction just like alcohol, drugs, and tobacco”. One out of every two people struggling with gambling disorder will experience suicidal ideation and one in five will attempt suicide. Gambling disorder typically presents with other co-occurring mental health and substance disorder problems and can cause devastating harm to people and families. The good news is that help is available and with appropriate treatment recovery is possible.
“It is a privilege to work at Ethos where we treat and support people and families struggling to overcome gambling addiction. I am grateful to the Employee Assistance Professionals Association for the opportunity to participate in this vitally important public health discussion.”

Patricia M Griffin, Ph.D. Associate Professor of Criminal Justice Holy Family University; Senior International Research Consultant United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime, Region of East Africa
Dr. Patricia Griffin (USA) is an Associate Professor of Criminal Justice and a scholar-practitioner with a demonstrated record of success carrying out applied mixed-methods research and evaluation in the areas of applied psychology, organization development, leadership, behavioral health, and public safety. Dr. Griffin is engaged in evaluation research of an Adult Drug Court, Mental Health Court, and a county-level co-responder program that integrates social workers into policing agencies.
Over the past five years, Dr. Griffin has served as the Senior International Research Consultant for the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime in East Africa during which time she served as the primary investigator to lead two country-wide assessments of drug and alcohol use in Kenya. She has worked with the Kenyan National Police Service and the Kenya Wildlife Service. For each of these assessments, Dr. Griffin carried out the initial desk work in her home base, and then commenced to carry out the field research in Kenya. This mixed-methods research included validated evidence-based scales such as AUDIT, CAGE, and the DSA-20, along with focus group discussions. Among the key research findings, the empirical data demonstrated the need for a broad- brush employee assistance program.
Dr. Griffin will serve as the primary presenter. She will lead the panel. Dr. Griffin’s contribution to the panel presentation will be to focus on the use of research to advance organization development and employee wellness.
Mr. John Mugendi, Director of Administration for the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS). Mr. Mugendi will join us via Zoom from Nairobi, Kenya. Among his many areas of responsibility, Mr. Mugendi is charged with ensuring that contractual obligations to the Kenyan Government, which includes identification and implementation of personnel’s alcohol and drug use, is accurately assessed and that amelioration programs are implemented, where needed. The Office of Human Resources and Human Capital fall under his domain.
Mr. Mugendi’s contribution to the panel presentation will be to focus on organization development.
Jim Nestor, MA, CEAP, LCADC. Mr. Nestor has almost forty years dedicated to organization development, employee health and wellness, and employee assistance professionals. Over the past five years, much needed attention has been directed at mental health in the workplace. At the same time, however, EAPs must not lose sight of substance use disorder and addiction services. Some EAP professionals have raised concern that these areas are not being addressed.
Mr. Nestor’s contribution to the panel will be to focus on substance use disorder and addiction.
Chris Scheiblein, BS, CEAP. Mr. Scheiblein has been working as an EAP since 2006. He has been an active member and has served in leadership roles in the Greater Philadelphia Chapter of the International Employee Assistance Professionals Association. Chris has developed peer counseling programs and has worked with unions and trade association members and their families to ensure that they receive the proper help and support with substance use disorder and metal health concerns.
Drawing upon this past work and his current position leading the IUPAT Helping Hand, Chris is uniquely positioned as a panelist to speak about administrative issues, especially as these relate to what he is doing in the area of peer counselors.
